A ZIP file bundles several files into one, compressing each of them, so they travel as a single attachment or download. Every major operating system opens it without extra software.
This tool creates a ZIP file in your browser from files you choose, with an optional password.
The result is a single .zip download.
Your files never leave your device, so this works for documents you would rather not upload anywhere, and on a computer where you cannot install anything.
The password option is the main reason to use this page over the Compress command built into your system. Those commands make ordinary ZIP files with no encryption, and the older ZipCrypto scheme that some tools still offer is easy to break.
On Windows, select the files and choose Send to, then Compressed folder. On macOS, choose Compress from the right-click menu. 7-Zip and PeaZip handle many more files, add AES encryption and offer the 7z format, which usually compresses better.
Archives encrypted here open in 7-Zip, WinZip and PeaZip. The ZIP openers built into Windows and macOS may not read AES encryption, so check that whoever receives the file has one of those programs.
To open or check a ZIP file, use Unzip Files on ToolkitBay. To compress a single file, Gzip Compress and Decompress or Zstd Compress and Decompress give you a .gz or .zst file instead.
ZIP stores dates in the old MS-DOS format: local time, two-second steps, nothing before 1980. Uploads in a browser carry no dates, so every file in an archive made here is dated 1980-01-01, the earliest date the format can hold.
Deflate, the method behind levels 1 to 9, arrived with PKZIP 2.0 in 1993 and is the same algorithm gzip and PNG use.
A password protects the contents of the files, not their names. Anyone can list the archive and see what is in it.
